What is a threat actor?

A threat actor is a person or group that deliberately endangers the security of IT systems, data or organisations.
The term helps classify attacks by origin, intent and capability.

Types of Threat Actors

Threat actors include criminals, activists, state groups, insiders and opportunists.
Two groups appear particularly often.

Cybercriminals

Cybercriminals act for profit.
They run ransomware, phishing, card fraud and trade in stolen data, often with a division of labour like a business.

Hacktivists

Hacktivists pursue political or social goals.
They take websites down, publish internal data or alter content to attract attention.

Motivations of Threat Actors

Motives determine which targets and methods an actor chooses.

Financial Gain

Money is the most common driver.
Ransom, stolen payment data, fraud and the sale of access generate income.

Political Beliefs

Activists and state groups act out of ideology, protest or strategic interest.
Their goal may be espionage, disruption or intimidation.

Methods Used by Threat Actors

Actors combine technical attacks with deception and automation.

Hacking

They exploit security holes, weak passwords and misconfigured services.
Bots try credentials at scale and search automatically for weaknesses.

Use of Malware

Malware such as trojans, spyware and ransomware provides lasting access, steals data or extorts victims.

Risks Posed by Threat Actors

The dangers affect finances, operations, data and reputation.

Financial Loss

Theft, ransom, recovery and penalties cause high costs.

Disruption of Operations

Encrypted or overloaded systems paralyse production, sales and communication, often for days or weeks.

Strategies for Mitigating Threats from Actors

Knowing your adversaries lets you focus your defence.

Technical Measures

Updates, two-factor sign-in, segmentation, monitoring and backups form the basis.
Bot protection such as CDPCaptcha slows down automated attacks on logins and forms.

Organizational Measures

Risk analyses, clear responsibilities, training and an incident plan ensure that attacks are detected early and handled quickly.
