What is content theft online?

Content theft takes digital text, images, video, or data from the owner and republishes or resells it without permission, often through automated collection.

The loss is both creative and commercial, because the copy can replace the audience, the subscription, or the data advantage the owner paid to build.

How it works

Some copying is done by people who save and repost, and some is done by scripts that walk a catalog all night.
Not every automated read is theft: a search indexer or a partner with a license may be welcome, and the difference is permission, scope, and whether the copy is offered as a substitute for the original.

Defenses mix access control, watermarking, rate limits, and contracts, plus a way to request removal when a copy appears elsewhere.
A delivery network can make content faster to fetch, but it does not decide who is allowed to republish it.

Concrete examples

  • A script copies a paid news archive overnight and a lookalike site serves the same stories the next morning.
  • Product descriptions and prices are harvested and listed on another shop as if that shop had written them.
  • A partner with a written license caches articles for its app, which is permitted use rather than theft.

Protective measures

  • State in plain language who may reuse your content, and keep licenses where your team can check them quickly.
  • Limit bulk access to catalogs and media, and investigate clients that read far more than a person would.
  • Mark valuable media so you can show origin when you ask another site or a host to remove a copy.
  • Separate welcome indexers and licensed partners from unknown harvesters in your traffic reports.

How CDPCaptcha helps

Browser proof of work increases the cost of automated copying sessions because each scripted collection visit must perform extra computation.

CDPCaptcha is a self-hosted proof of work check in the browser, with no cookies, no tracking, and no picture puzzles.
It is made and hosted in the EU, in Germany, and the service is described at https://cdpcaptcha.com/.
