What is return fraud?

Return fraud abuses refunds, exchanges, or warranty claims to obtain money or goods without a fair return to the seller.

The store loses the item, the money, or both, while the abuser keeps the benefit of a policy meant for honest problems.

How it works

Patterns include sending back an empty box, returning a different item, using a purchase once and then refunding it, or claiming a delivery never arrived when it did.
Receipt copies and stolen order numbers can support the story.

The abuse sits next to real customer rights, so blunt refusal harms honest buyers.
Better control looks for repeated patterns, ties orders together, and reviews high risk claims without publishing the thresholds.

Concrete examples

  • A buyer wears a formal outfit to an event and returns it the next day as unworn.
  • A package arrives with the wrong goods inside while the refund asks for the original price.
  • Someone files a missing parcel claim after a photo shows the box already at the door.

Protective measures

  • Link returns to the original order, the payer, and the destination before you release a refund.
  • Inspect high value returns and compare serial numbers with what left the warehouse.
  • Review accounts that refund far more often than similar customers, and ask for a second check.
  • Keep the policy kind for genuine faults while separating claims that repeat the same story.
